This past Saturday, February 22, we had the pleasure of getting interviewed and investigated by the cast and crew of HBO Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel (minus Mr. Gumbel). The segment, which will be aired the last Tuesday in March, was regarding invasive species in the U.S… and we all know that the most destructive invasive species is the feral hog.
So, the camera crew went on a ride along with Cason Caraway and his team to go hog hunting on Friday, February 21. They got to see first hand what hog hunting was like at night time with thermal scopes. Needless to say, they had fun, and were a little frightened at the same time, but they all said they would do it again.
Saturday morning came along and the crew slowly got up and going, possibly a little late since they all said they didn’t go to bed till around 3:00 a.m. Tres and I (Trey), got up and going at his barn, aka Weigh-In location, to get prepared for our interviews and some hog weighing. We also knew they were going to interview our local Game Warden, David Pelazzari, who I’m glad was there since there was a 330 pound hog brought in to weigh.
The crew from HBO video’d everything. From the contestants driving into the barn, to them leaving. They asked how we inspected each hog, from checking the ears, the nose, pushing on its belly, and scanning with a metal detector. They interviewed some of the contestants and asked them what they thought of the hog population and the destruction they do. It was something not every country boy gets to see. The interviewer showed up right as the 330# hog arrived, which couldn’t have been better timing for the Ferocious Flamingos. She asked quite a few questions, even some that made us think a little.
As it came time for our interviews, the lighting crew took almost 2 hours just to get the lighting and set up the way they wanted. Once the interview started, it took about 10 minutes to finally calm down and realize that this was easy and we weren’t being interviewed for a murder, but in the beginning you could have fooled us… the lights were right in our eyes and everyone in the room was so quiet. We had to pause a couple times due to dogs barking and planes flying over, which was kind of nice so we could stretch our legs. After 1 hour and 20 minutes, we finished our interview… to probably only be on the air for 30 seconds 🙂
Below are a couple of pictures we took of the event, but be sure to stay tuned to the last Tuesday in March to watch our segment on HBO Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.
